Just for some background, the close button inside each tab is also
used in Internet Explorer 7, and they are planned "for initial
discoverability" in Firefox 2
(http://wiki.mozilla.org/Tabbed_Browsing/User_Interface_Design) . KDE
has the file icon turn to a close button on mouseover.

There are pros and cons for each, but I don't know whether it's
important enough to be an option.
