Thanks you very much for replying,  I tried switching to several different
themes (I only have the ones included with my original installation of 
Ubuntu).
  One of the themes I tried is the one called "Gnome default."

Unfortunately, I get exactly the same behaviour when trying to start 
Monodevelop
with every theme I tried.

What else should I try?
