Hello Peter,

Our friends on the Debian-cli team have released 4.0.12 in debian sid
and ubuntu trusty:

https://packages.debian.org/sid/monodevelop
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/monodevelop

Anything pre-built and newer than that will have to come from an
unofficial repo as Eberhard indicated earlier.

If you want something on the bleeding edge, you'll need to do as Jeff
says and build from source:

http://monodevelop.com/developers/building_monodevelop

If you are interested in building from source, I strongly recommend a
dedicated machine (or a multi-boot environment) for the task. You will
likely experience system instability due to the dynamic and un-tested
nature of bleeding edge software.

Cheers,

C.J.
