Forgive me for being negative but I have had nothing but frustration
using Monodevelop in Ubuntu with anything other than the version from
their repositories. Ubuntu is built with end users in mind and does not
easily lend itself to custom updates. If you need the newest version of
Monodevelop I fear you might have to make so many updates to your
version of Ubuntu that you will break other parts of the OS. I other
words you may face a dependency nightmare.
The newest version of Monodevelop is, to the best of my knowledge,
supported first in OpenSuse and unfortunately Ubuntu is a few versions
behind. Let me be clear Ubuntu is a fantastic Linux distro but they have
never had the newest version of Monodevelop in their repositories.
Sorry I can be of no help
