[MonoDevelop] Running a Mono application without Mono installed?

  Of course they are moving away.
It's buggy, it's a patent risk, and it's lower performance and higher
memory consumption than C/C++.

They still include it by default because C# is very popular, and there
aren't any good replacements for some C# requiring applications. As you
saw, sometimes these replacements appear, and then they are
incorporated, and the C# programs replaced.

C# should be used for web-services, enterprise user programs or
security-critical servers, and not for system programs.
