[MonoDevelop] Assembly Browser not working

Hello
I've only recently deserted windows to learn linux and my first impression
is that the free world is complicated to grasp.
So here I am, running MonoDevelop on one windows machine and another one on
my new Linux machine. The assembly browser plugin opens fine in the windows
environement but it doesn't launch under Ubuntu and displays the following
cryptic symbols instead:
http://mono.1490590.n4.nabble.com/file/n3163568/AssemblyBrowser.png

I've tried different newbie's techniques to get monodevelop to work properly
and one that yielded something was to install everything again under a
prefix using "$ ./configure --prefix=/opt/mono"; make; make install.
Installing mono2.8 GtkSharp gnome-sharp and monodevelop2.4.1 in this
fashion, I got a monodevelop installation that was missing GnomePlatform but
started nonetheless and it could display the AssemblyBrowser fine. However,
I couldn't find the trick to fix the GnomePlatform problem that prevented
MonoDevelop from launching the terminal for console applications for
example.
So does anyone understands why monodevelop doesn't start the assembly
browser? I've googled the whole day for an answer.
Thanks
Guillaume
