While *I* don't have any projects as such, I am quite sure that there
are mixed-code VB and C# projects and/or solutions out there.  The icon
becomes important, then, when you can't see the full name.

Though, a well-designed custom tooltip would be useful in that
situation, too.  The "tabtip" would provide the file type icon, and the
file's name, and, to balance the look of it, perhaps some (light) file
metadata, too.  (Size, or maybe miniature code-metrics if they are
already pre-computed.)
