I think that adding a new layer of abstraction and coping with two
different systems for translations means that you are mostly doubling
your work, and will not be able to focus on getting one right.

I advocate simplicity, I would propose to get the gettext-based version
working first, and working well, and cope with other systems later, as a
refactoring exercise.
