IMHO Microsoft's terminology also follows a logic.

The problem with "Assembly" is that a "Project" (in your terms) can
contain "things" other than assemblies, for example databases,
documentation works, etc.

"Solution" and "Project" are just names for abstract concepts. Learning
their meaning takes only a few seconds (just like learning the meaning
of an icon). That's the same time it would take to learn what
"Project"/"Assembly" would mean in the context of MonoDevelop.

The current names also makes the life easier to people moving from
VS.NET, which is a good point.
