I have used http://badgerports.org/ to upgrade to Mono 2.6.7-3ubuntu1~dhx1
but the DOS prompt still appears.
I will have a go at compiling 2.8 from source.

Mono 2.4 is pretty old, can you update to 2.8 (which was released
yesterday)?
