I thought that this thing might possibly use different code in the
backend. Obviously it doesn't.

Package versions are:

mono-runtime   2.4.4~svn151842-1ubuntu4
   (pretty much everything with mono in it has this version number)
libgdiplus     2.4.2-1ubuntu0.10.04.1

There are no package dependencies between these two. I had to install
them separately (i.e. none of them was installed as a dependency of the
other).

No, I installed it all from the standard Ubuntu package sources.
