[Mono-list] Learn C# without Visual Studio

Hi, all.  I'm new to the list and C# programming (really new to programming
in general).  I took some Java courses while at school, but then didn't
touch it again.  I'd like to learn C#, but don't want to use Visual Studio.
The problem I'm encountering is that all the books I find assume its use.
Can you all recommend some books/web sites/tutorials that will teach someone
to program in C# without Visual Studio?
