[Mono-list] Any way to set something like environment variables?

Hello list,
I got a problem with configuring some environment variables on an Ubuntu
system. I tried to set them in /etc/profile and /etc/environment, but
nothing worked fine. As I only want to use those variables with Mono it came
to my mind that there should be a way to configure such variables only for
the Mono environment. Is that true? And if it is how can I proceed with?

Any help will be appriciated.
