[Mono-list] Linux starter mcs question

I've been waiting for mono to be able to compile on Linux and you seem to be 
nearly there so I've tried compiling mono-0.9 today.  mono and mint seem to 
run OK and mcs produces 
"error CS2008: No files to compile were specified"
as expected, 
but when trying to compile a simple hello world type C# example (off the 
mono.baselibs.org page) I get this error:
(process:26640): ** WARNING **: Could not find assembly System.Xml 
/people/paulb/Apps/lib/System.Xml.dll

The path stated is where it is installed OK so what can't it find?

Sorry for a basic question!
