In the May 2002, Vol 2, No. 5, there is an article "Expand .NET Beyond
Windows".
It can also be found online at:
http://www.fawcette.com/dotnetmag/2002_05/magazine/columns/strategy/
In the article the mention Mono and Ximian.
"Finally, third-party resources could take the scrap of technology
released to ECMA and run with it-independent of
Microsoft-to clone the .NET Framework. There are a number of these
projects underway today, locked behind the closed
doors of various research labs. The most famous public example is the
Mono project hosted by Ximian-an open source
software company (see Resources). Starting with the ECMA-submitted
specifications, the Mono project hopes to provide a
.NET-compatible platform completely independent of Microsoft's
intellectual property and copyrighted material. If the success
of Linux has taught us anything, it's that you can never count out the
efforts of a motivated group of open source developers."
I like the last line!
