Interactive Tools has a free WYSIWYG javascript editor that uses the textarea,
and modifies it...  See http://www.interactivetools.com/products/htmlarea/ for
more details.  Version 3.0 works with mozilla too.  I use it quite a bit now,
and have found it works well.  This might be of some use to you.
