I wouldn't have asked if I could :-) I don't have Cygwin installed.

Perhaps it was MCS that did not allow '\' characters, rather than CSC that
did not allow '/' characters?

Can someone on the list who is using Cygwin check whether, when using
Microsoft's compiler, references work with forward slashes?
