The current version (tested with 2.8 but git shows nothing has changed for 2.10
as well) still suffers from this problem. 

Either the port name should not be checked for starting with "\\\\" or the port
name should be prepended with "\\\\.\\" when opening.

Port names with numbers higher then 9 do happen quit often these days due to
USB devices providing serial ports all seem to create new devices/ports.
