It looks like the "pngcrush" step of Apple's iphoneos-optimize tool is
corrupting your images. Can you verify this by copying one of your images to a
temp file, an running pngcrush on the temp file? 

cp RealImage.png Test.png
/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/pngcrush Test.png

then check whether Test.png is corrupt.
