As I posted to the Mono dev list, uncommenting the #define NO_PTHREAD_TRYLOCK
in gcconfig.h seems to alleviate a lot of this performance penalty. I have only
tested on 10.5 and 10.6 intel Macs, so I can't speak for 10.4 or prior or for
PPC archs.
