One of the two sets of issues does indeed appear to be fixed, thanks!

The second set of problems is still present on the tip of the 2.4 branch,
however.  This is related to stale entries in the wrapper method caches.  The
patch I provided with my initial message still applies without changes, and
still fixes the problem for me ...
