Ah. To complicate things further, I see the behavior differs from XP to Vista
(not even talking about specific appearance configurations, but default
settings).
My report above was for Vista.

To sum things up, this is what I get:

Windows XP:
Node clicked before selection: *no* focus rectangle
Node selected: focus rectangle

Windows Vista:
Node clicked before selection: focus rectangle
Node selected: focus rectangle

The way I understand it, the XP behavior I see is the opposite of the one you
described (focus rectangle disappearing on release)...
