Well, it's a virtual filesystem after all - each file is contained in a
directory, so you need to report a consistent image to the consumer of your VPP
implementation. I followed that logic when implementing support for VPP in
Mono, but apparently MS.NET ignores files outside directories (which is, as I
wrote in comment #1 above, a bug in their implementation IMO)

It isn't necessary to have that workaround in place now - as explained in
comment #1 (but it is still a good idea to fully implement your VPP as you
might be relying on possibly buggy MS.NET behavior)
