Let's not get too far afield :-)  The build system is not unfixable.

Basically, someone(me?) needs to apply your patch, perform a full bootstrap,
and find out where the build breaks because of the stricter version checks, and
use appropriate --runtime= and/or <supportedRuntime> sections to guide the
bootstrap at critical junctures.

As a starting clue, I'd like to find out _why_ you needed to disable MONO_PATH?
 Specifically, which pass of the bootstrap broke, which assembly?  (The above
log isn't very useful, since it's an expected failure due to disabling
MONO_PATH)

Marek, if you remember it offhand, that'd be great.  Otherwise, someone(I?)'ll
apply the patch and work it out.
