Problem persists here on x86_64 (CentOS5), gcc 4.1.1. I have tested
--without-libgif and --without-libjpeg:

/usr/bin/ld: .libs/image.o: relocation R_X86_64_PC32 against
`gdip_get_encoder_parameter_list_size_jpeg' can not be used when making a
shared object; recompile with -fPIC
