Dick, I finally managed to reproduce this issue consistently on both the 1.0
and 2.0 profile by running the race condition unit test in a loop.

The crash does not always happen in the same way. Sometimes I get the SIGABRT
almost immediately, and sometimes the application blocks for a minute or more
before I get the SIGABRT.

To reproduce, compile and run the attached source code.
