+No, compiling with --with-tls=pthread didn't make any difference.

+There is another version of mono installed on my machine (1.1.13.8) 
+which is the packaged version from blastwave.

+I have tried building the latest tarball and get the same problem.

+I realise I could just install the build from the download page 
+however there is a change relating to the XmlTypeAttribute class 
+which was implemented on the 21st September which I need in order to 
+get a web service working.
