Do you have all the devel packages installed??
You don't say what dist you are using, but you should install 
gnomevfs-devel or something to get things going...

Thanks Fredrik. that worked.
what a relief I spent days on this one. ( I guess that is just because I am new to compiling on linux) 
I wish it would was written in the README
