Thanks Jon. Surely that's not the only difference. Anyone know what the other differences are?

When I setup an avd file, there is a target that I can select. It seems that for each android api level, there is an associated google api of the same level. what's the difference between these 2 platform choices for an emulator session?

Everything. ;-)
The latter is the former plus Google Maps/etc. support. So if you want to test out Google Maps, you need to use the Google APIs add-on target.
