SOLVED!

Apparently there are good packages in the
<http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Mono/openSUSE_12.1/> repo.
After pulling in these MD opens without errors, opens solutions &
projects without errors, and the GUI editor works [shows signals,
etc...]
