[MonoDevelop] Debugging debugging

All,

I just installed MD 2.4.1 and I optimistically hoped that it would
cure my debugging woes. Alas, no. So I was wondering if someone could
give me a high level view of where debugging is in MD.

I guess my most basic question is, what are all the debugger choices
about in the Edit->Preferences->Debugger dialog? I see seven choices:
Custom Command Mono Soft Debugger, Mono Soft Debugger, GNU Debugger,
Mono Soft Debugger for ASP.Net, Mono Soft Debugger for Moonlight, and
Mono Debugger for ASP.Net. I get exceptions choosing Mono Debugger or
GNU Debugger as the first choice. Choosing Mono Soft Debugger starts
ok, but the process unravels quickly, often taking MD with it.

Is it my installation that makes debugging so unstable? I have
installed MD 2.4.1, as well as the monodevelop-debugger-{mdb, gdb}-2.4
packages. I am running on Ubuntu 10.10.

Thanks for any help. Having real debugging and not relying on print
statements would be a real improvement.

Matt
