Thanks everyone, you've all been most helpful. I will go and try this out.

By the way, to the recommendation of 'Having the best of both worlds', and
having a dll that can be called by both the console app and the service app
- this is exactly the approach I had followed when I was writing about my
experiences of Services being a bit of a pain. I wouldn't say that both
worlds were equally good - more like throwing in a not so good world with
the one good one. :)
