The icon seems pointless until you realize that the icon tells you what
type of file it is.  I'd vote to keep the icon, but shrink it with the
tab size.  Also, only display the (x) when hovering over where the
close button would be if it were always displayed.

Other than that... it's an improvement, I think.  :)
