Well, I wrote that because I figured out how were working the previous
checks and supposed that the launch script of gentoo should look the
same, but now that Mike has posted it contents, we can see that the
environment variable is being set without any quotation marks at all, so
I suppose the cut with "=" is correct (I was wrong).

However I think we could come out with a solution that may satisfy both
cases (in case someone adds the quotation marks in the future to the
gentoo launch script).
