I'm using Edgy myself (though x64) and it works fine. The only change
in the command is that it's using /bin/sh instead of /bin/bash, though
I can't see why that would make a difference.

I don't have a /usr/lib/libXrender.la, only /usr/lib/libXrender.a and
libXrender.so.*, so you may have an old version lying around. Also,
have you tried reinstalling libtool and libxrender-dev?
