I seem to remember the GEdit team implemented somthing like this a while 
ago but as a side bar. It doesn't seem to have made it into a release 
though.
The trouble with searching in an editor as opposed to a browser window 
is that you usually want more options readily available and they 
wouldn't easily fit in the firefox like horizontal panel.
