I suppose running ldconfig would have fixed it as well (if the location is in 
/etc/ld.so.conf).   Duh!!!

While you are at it, Paul.  Couple of edits:
1. There is a cd missing from the instructions  (cd ../mono)
2. make monolite-bootstrap no longer exists either; simply use make
