The place is right, but I guess that the updated glib was installed in th=
e
wrong place, so the configure script can't find it.
Did you configure the upated glib (before compilng) with 
./configure
or 
./configure --prefix=3D/usr
this last one being correct to update a stock RH9 install

Otherwise, simply install red-carpet and use it to download and install
the updated glib packages.
