I downloaded the source to a SWF app from one of the usual .NET sites and tried mcs and got a message that it couldn't find System.Windows.Forms.Form. (Actually, I had to remove a "using" from the midst of the code before I got that far). So I downloaded another SWF app and tried to compile its source and got the same problem. ??? I didn't want to go to BugZilla if this is a classic Newbie problem. BTW ... the second app does not run when I point mono or mint at it even though it runs on the native XP .NET ... that's a very different problem. --= Marty Heyman From wayne@dogpoop.cjb.net Wed Jan 28 07:51:07 2004 From: wayne@dogpoop.cjb.net (Wayne Jensen) Date: Wed, 28 Jan 2004 00:51:07 -0700 Subject: [Mono-winforms-list] WinForms not working with simple programs Message-ID: <401769EB.7010507@dogpoop.cjb.net> The answer to my question is probably "RTFM"... but if it is, *please* point me toward a manual that explains this. I've been searching for hours and can't find an answer. I installed Mono from CVS and set up wine, following the instructions on the Mono web site. I successfully compiled a simple WinForms app using mcs (one that I had previously run on .NET), then tried to run it with Mono and had strange things happened. I got errors saying "err:menu:MENU_GetSysMenu failed to load system menu!" a blank form was displayed, and a box popped up on top of that form that said: "The application has produced an exception. Press 'continue' if you want the application to try to continue its execution. An exception was thrown by the type initializer for System.Drawing.GDIPlus" This box had three buttons (which appear to be blank until I click on them): Stack Trace, Continue, Quit. Clicking "Stack Trace" causes the message "Control notification Code 0 Id = Hwnd 65595" to appear in the console. Clicking "Close" makes the form and the popup box go away, but the app is still running in the console. Clicking "Continue" makes the popup go away, and another one appears saying "GdipCreateFromHDC" and these messages appear in the console: "err:menu:MENU_CopySysPopup Unable to load default system menu err:menu:MENU_GetSysMenu failed to load system menu! err:menu:MENU_CopySysPopup Unable to load default system menu err:menu:MENU_GetSysMenu failed to load system menu!" After hours of searching, the only thing I could think is that I was using features that weren't implemented, so I downloaded this example from the Mono wiki: http://www.nullenvoid.com/mono/wiki/index.php/The%20TextBox%20Control. It did the same thing, except that instead of a blank form it had the text boxes as shown in the screen shots (same error messages, same popup on top of the form). My system: Red Hat Fedora Core 1 AMD Athlon XP Mono from CVS Wine from rpm mono-wine-20030318-1.ximian.6.1.i386.rpm BTW, I'm able to run console "Hello World" apps just fine, but when I try Gtk# or Gnome# apps I get "Unhandled Exception: System.DllNotFoundException: libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll" and "Unhandled Exception: System.DllNotFoundException: libgobject-2.0-0.dll" I know this problem is OT for this list, but I just thought I'd include it just in case the problems were related. When I tried fixing this, the only information I found said it was problems with /etc/mono/config, but I checked mine and it matches what the other postings I read said it should be. Message-ID: <07D54C48.28819492.009D69AF@netscape.net> I was pretty excited about writing a gui app with C# under Linux. What a disappointment. I first install Mono via Red-Carpet. I then did the mono-wine patch. I have also compiled the daily snapshot of 01/21/2004 but still see no improvements on getting any C# Gui app to running under Linux. I am hoping that someone has had success with the winforms and mono. So if you have any suggestion on how to get the gui up and running I would really be greatful. Symptom 1: I can compile a simple c# Winforms program (see below test1.cs) without any errors, but when I run the exe a dialog appears with message "An exception was thrown by the type initializer for System.Drawing.GDIPlus" Symptom 2: I complied the test app checkedListBoxCtrl.cs from the sample winform links of mono. In the Console it gives me "Unhandled Exception: System.TypeInitializationException: An exception was thrown by the type initializer for System.Drawing.GDIPlus ---> System.EntryPointNotFoundException: GdiplusStartup" -------------------test1.cs------------------------ using System.Windows.Forms; using System.Drawing; namespace Test { public class Test : System.Windows.Forms.Form { public Test():base() { this.Text = "My First Test"; this.TabIndex = 0; this.Size = new System.Drawing.Size(512, 320); } public static void Main(string[] args) { Test t = new Test(); System.Console.WriteLine("Test object is "+t); Application.Run(t); System.Console.WriteLine("Hello World"); } } } __________________________________________________________________ New! Some explanation. System.Windows.Forms-winelib is broken due to some structural changes atm. If you have cvs and want to play around with swf, try swf-gtk. It is in mcs/class/System.Windows.Forms/Gtk It can already be used for quite a few controls. It is in a better state than swf-winelib, but will not have the completeness of swf-winelib in the long run. But give swf-gtk a try if need to play around with swf. But if you want to create gui apps, you should be using Gtk#, not swf. Cheers Joel Basson
