Yet another update -- I did an strace of the startup of monostub, and it
appears it is trying to find monostub.exe.so in the standard library paths,
and it never checks /usr/local/lib/wine/. I made a link into /usr/lib and
the behaviour is now different: an assertion fails and it pops up a dialog
(looks very WINE-ish) asking if I want to debug. I am about to click 'Yes',
though of course it probably won't work :-)
