[Mono-osx] Failing to run WinForms hello.cs on OS X

I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.4.
I have installed MonoFramework-MDK-3.8.0.macos10.xamarin.x86.pkg.
I created and ran the first hello.cs listed on
http://www.mono-project.com/docs/getting-started/mono-basics/; this worked
fine.
The second hello.cs, using WinForms, crashed on execution with the stack
dump in the attached file.
I then ran
> mono-test-install
Active Mono: /usr/bin/mono
Warning: pkg-config could not find mono installed on this system
No dotnet pkgconfig found, Windows.Forms, System.Drawing and others will not
work

So, what went wrong with the install, and what should I do to correct
matters?
Googling, I have seen that others have this same problem, but I haven't
actually found a solution to the issue. Hope you will be able to help.
