[Mono-osx] Mac Mono advice sought

I'm using gmcs. nant -v produces the following:

[csc] Starting '/Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/Versions/1.2.2.1/ 
bin/mono ("/Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/Versions/1.2.2.1/lib/ 
mono/2.0/gmcs.exe" @"/var/tmp/tmp551b2476.tmp")

But I'm even more interested in suggestions on how to figure out  
these sorts of issues myself.

I tried using the --trace flag to mono, but as soon as it attempts to  
print out tracing information it aborts with a misaligned stack message.
