[Mono-osx] using and installing on Mac osX

I am a relatively new user of a mac- about 4 months. 
I am a teacher and use a grade book that is in ms sql.
 It currently uses .net 1.1 frame work and I have
updated to 2.0.  I need to be able to use this
database on my mac preferably without RDC or virtual
PC.  Is mono ready for prime time?  Will I need to
spend hours adjusting code to get it to work?  Should
I forget it?  This looks like a real solution to an
ubiquitous problem – mac compatibility with the world.
