I am one of the packagers of Mono for Fedora and Epel. I could probably
upgrade Mono from 4.2 to 4.8 in Epel 6.
But there has not been any requests yet.
I have also a copr with Mono 4.8 for Epel 6:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/tpokorra/mono/

Would that help you, or are you looking for Mono 5.x anyway?

Here is the situation of Mono for Fedora and Epel:
https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/mono
I cannot upgrade to Mono 5.x, because it has dependancies on msbuild and
.Net Core,
which have not been packaged yet in the "Fedora" way, ie. we cannot
rebuild the packages from source yet without external binary sources.
The dotnet SIG is working towards that goal though in cooperation with
Microsoft: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/DotNet

My suggestion for your current situation is to disable epel while
installing the packages from Xamarin.

something like:
yum --disablerepo=epel install mono-core

I have not tried this, but I think that should work.

All the best,
   Timotheus
