[Mono-list] displaying unicode characters in Ubuntu

I'm using GDI+ to display text.  Normally in Windows, Unicode characters
display seamlessly.  When I run my application on Ubuntu, most Unicode
characters will not display unless I specifically install a font which
supports those characters.  I've noticed that programs such as gedit,
Firefox, and even the terminal seem to natively support unicode characters. 
Is there some way to automatically display all unicode characters properly
in GDI+, or am I stuck installing and specifying new fonts?
