[Mono-list] mono fork, commit fails with fatal: Not a git repository [...] Lucene.Net after a autogen+make build

Hi,

Not sure whether this is a mono or mono-devel question.

I have a fork of mono, freshly cloned/checked out on a Win7 box, to which I could commit.

However after a ./autogen and a 'make' (the former doing some 'things' looking like a checkout with external modules including Lucene.Net), trouble:

   F:\pathto\mono>git commit -m "Add a markdown readme"
fatal: Not a git repository: /cygdrive/f/pathto/mono/.git/modules/external/Lucene.Net

Not being a Git guru I vaguely suspect cygwin and/or NTFS permission issues under .git, but so far failed to weed this problem out (I am local admin and can change perm. settings)
Any pointer? I know this is likely a Git issue not particular to Mono, but I failed to find relevant info.
Also, this may be relevant to other people checking out on windows boxes: I don't think my setup is unusual.
