You mentioned you had a shared library that opens a pipe. Suggesting
to me that it is in the same process, so calling an unmanaged function
to return the data seems easier.

The unix sockets on mono work pretty well, I've been using mono as a
unix sockets client to talk to virtualbox and vmware serial ports for
a while now.
