[Mono-list] No List in mono 2.10.5?

Hi all, I'm new to the Mono world. In Monodevelop 2.6 with Mono 2.10.5
I am getting the error that the type List does not exist. The project
is targeting Mono/.NET 3.5 and bumping that up to 4.0 does not help.
What must I be missing? Thanks.
