[Mono-list] mdtool release build

I'm having trouble using the mdtool command line utility to build a release config of my project.  I've changed the project from Debug to Release config in monodevelop and that doesen't seem to change the behavior of mdtool.  Is there a command line switch or other which I can use to choose another build configuration?
