[Mono-list] Looking for an mplayer (or similar) wrapper

I've just moved to Linux and I'm not happy with the state of video 
players. I'm quite familiar with C# so I thought I'd have a crack at 
making a player for myself, but in order to do so I'm going to need 
something I can push the actual video rendering off onto - preferably 
something that can handle a plethora of codecs too.

An mplayer wrapper would be ideal because it handles everything, but at 
this stage any suggestions or similar open-source mono projects would be 
of great help.
